A Whitechapel Post!

-First of all, thanks to Tania for suggesting I watch this show, because I love both procedurals and historical crime, so this was the perfect combination!

-I can't believe Chandler's team made it through 8 cases without a single perp making it to trial without dying, that is supremely bad luck and I'm so upset the show was cancelled before we could see where (if anywhere) they were going with that plotline. I'm really glad it got acknowledged in-universe, though, because I was just starting to think, "Gosh, these criminals sure are dying at unusually high rates."

-Buchan is my son and the light of my life. (He reminds me of myself, unfortunate crushes and obsession with 19th-century serial killers and all.)

-I loved that medical examiner, Llewelyn. Was she pregnant because the actress was pregnant, or was that a plotline that didn't get resolved? (Also I would like you to know that before I remembered the phrase "medical examiner", I was ready to google "what do you call the cop who does autopsies?")

-I so wish we could have gotten more about Mansell's suicide attempt...I didn't see any fic about it, either. Getting back together with Erica (Erika?) isn't going to completely fix the fact that he's suicidal, and I am concerned about him!

-Creepy immortal old lady was exactly the type of content I want to see in my crime shows, to be honest. I wish we got to see more of that plotline too...

-(Let me know if there's Whitechapel info I'm not aware of, guys, like if we got to hear anything more outside of actual episodes about any of the stuff I'm complaining about.) (Ahhh does that sentence even make sense?)

-I have so many epic fics to finish, but someday I will write the epic Whitechapel post-series 4 fic where all of the supernatural plotlines get resolved. Why is everything happening in Whitechapel? Who is the lady in red? Is it the supernatural shit that's making everyone's mental health issues act up? (Spoiler alert: the answer to that last question is no. I love the way canon portrayed mental illness, but/and I do think the character might attribute their problems to supernatural stuff for a while.)

-I really want to send Chandler to therapy. Maybe I'm just projecting because I screwed myself over by not admitting I needed therapy for a long time, but I want this fic.

-EDIT: I forgot to mention three of the characters? This is what I get for posting after a 7-hour shift.

-Miles is great and his friendship with Chandler is great and I want all the fic of him forcing inviting Chandler to spend time with his family/children.

-I love Riley so much as well, and I wish we'd gotten to meet her children/spouse in canon. (Does she canonically have a husband, or am I free to assume she has a wife?)

-Kent is adorable and so smitten with Chandler. I can't believe his first (semi-)confession of his feelings got ruined by a bus full of cannibalistic cult members crashing. Rotten luck, Kent.

OMG I DID NOT NOTICE THIS!!! Anyway, I love all of this.

ED BUCHAN, BEAUTIFUL CINNAMON ROLL TOO GOOD FOR THIS WORLD, TOO PURE. What an excellent autistic, and omg the special interest and he's so great with his attempts at being all blustery.

And yes, such bad luck with the suspects dying. Like, seriously. BUT they do actually save victims several times, which is good!!! And they technically catch the perps, it's just that unfortunately none of them ever get to trial. And I love that they mention it and Joe spends so much time being like BRING THEM IN ALIVE THIS TIME. It's like the saddest running gag of all time.

I also love Llewelyn. She was so great, I love how into her job she was. Also, yeah, I think the actress was pregnant.

I KNOW, RIGHT, WHY HASN'T ANYONE WRITTEN ABOUT MANSELL'S SUICIDE ATTEMPT??? THANKFULLY I AM CURRENTLY FILLING THE VOID, SO STAY TUNED FOR MY 'MANSELL IS DEFINITELY BIPOLAR AND TOTALLY ATTEMPTED SUICIDE LET'S TALK ABOUT IT AND ALSO ERICA SHOULD PROBABLY FREAK OUT ABOUT IT BECAUSE THAT'S IN THE REALM OF REASONABLE BEHAVIOR AND ALSO EPIC FRIENDSHIP WITH RILEY YAY'. I have 3,188 words of that fic written so far.

YES, WRITE AN EPIC WHITECHAPEL POST SERIES 4 FIC DEALING WITH SUPERNATURALNESS AND MENTAL HEALTH. I AM ALSO PLANNING AN EPIC POST SERIES 4 FIC, BUT NOT SO MUCH DEALING WITH SUPERNATURALNESS, MORE WITH MENTAL HEALTH. Also I agree that Joe really needs some therapy. Everyone needs some therapy. I think I will include some therapy in that fic.

And yeah, everything goes haywire mental health wise in series 4 (but I got diagnoses for everyone!!! Bipolar and rapid cycling Mansell who is passively suicidal a lot of the time, Borderline Personality Disorder Kent, OCD and autistic Chandler, autistic Ed, and token neurotypicals Miles, Riley, and Erica Kent, and also everyone has PTSD and probably Joe has C-PTSD, which is Complex PTSD, because the poor guy's just had one trauma after another in his life, starting when he was like ten with his DAD, that was so fucking sad what the hell). I think maybe there's some supernatural stuff that TRIGGERS it, but not because it's literally making it happen, because it's supernatural stuff and everything's weird and that's triggering in itself.

ALSO GUESS WHAT I'M ALSO WRITING? THE FIC WHERE MILES FORCES CHANDLER TO SPEND TIME WITH THE WIFE AND KIDS. I HAVE NAMES [though Liam already had a name but he's the only one who gets one in universe) AND PERSONALITIES FOR ALL THE KIDS. It doesn't say how many sons the Mileses have, only that they only have sons, so I've decided on three. Liam (11), Jason (9), and Ollie (6). I've also decided that each of the kids imprint on one of the team members (other than Riley but they all love her anyway, they all love all of them). Liam on Mansell, Jason on Kent, OLLIE ON ED I REALLY WANTED A SMALL MILES TO IMPRINT ON ED AND JUST THINK HE'S THE COOLEST AND MILES IS SO CAUGHT OFF GUARD AND IS LIKE SERIOUSLY SON SERIOUSLY, and obviously the baby (I call her Chrissy) on Ed.

Actually most of the Joe-centric fics I'm writing include Miles forcing him to spend time with the kids. Or all of them. Even though there is the necessary kid/teenfic because I write one for most fandoms where Joe and Kent are foster brothers who really hate their foster home and eventually meet Miles and his family and it's all great. ALSO I'm totally going to write the fic where EVERYONE IS FRIENDS.

(also the D/s AU I've been brainstorming with a Whitechapel friend who's over in England shhh)

I've decided that Riley has two kids, a boy and a girl, and the boy is ten and the girl is seven and then she has a husband, Theo. (Also in my head he's black because I thought of him and he was black.)

And Riley and Mansell are totally bros.

And Erica and Mansell fall in love super fast but don't get married because that's clearly a kiss of death when it comes to Mansell.

I actually REALLY like Mansell. (What about the scene where after he watches the Lon Cheney movie with the mentally ill murderer guy he goes up to him and says that he liked it and the guy grins and asks really and Mansell's like 'yeah, it's a classic' and the guy gives him the movie for safekeeping??? I love that scene so much and I was weirdly touched, okay.) He is my trash cinnamon roll.

Also I love how much darker and creepier Kent gets over the course of the series. Like his smiles in, say, series one are super sweet, but by series four there's this edge of creepiness to him. And he also has the eerie pale skinned brunette thing going on.

I'm glad that you are writing the Mansell fic and also the Joe-forced-to-interact-with-children fic, omg!! (I'm forever glad that our tastes in fic overlap so well, considering that we share so many small fandoms/segments-of-fandoms.) (And if you want a beta for your stuff, I am always available! I can do spelling and grammar, and structural stuff/stylistic stuff.)

And procedurals/mysteries with supernatural elements are my kryptonite, and I'm actually kinda excited that that particular plotline ended where it did, because it means I can write whatever I want and it'll be technically canon-compliant!

(I've got so many fics I need to finish, though...there's a zombie apocalypse one for another fandom, and a Les Mis one where Cosette is half-fairy and she and Eponine end up going on a magical adventure together to save Valjean's soul, and the Whitechapel one which will delve more into Louise Iver [and I totally didn't even realize her name sounded like Lucifer, omg!])

And just...so many of the horror stories I read have the supernatural force as the sole reason for people "going crazy" or whatever, and I'd much rather read the story where maybe the ghost is a trigger, but then it gets exorcised or whatever and the protagonist is like, "Well, the ghost is gone but I still have all these compulsions/suicidal impulses/etc, what am I supposed to do?" And I can't fit horror elements into my main origfic project, so I'm just writing revenge-fanfic that features the ghost stories/demon stories/etc that I want to read, without all the stuff I don't like. (This is only tangentially connected to Whitechapel--I read so many ghost novels this summer, and all but a few of them were really sexist and/or ableist. But Whitechapel had supernatural stuff and also a good treatment of mental health issues, so I am claiming it as my own to write all the ghost fic about.)

And yeah, I loved the scene with Mansell and the movie as well! And Kent's character progression, omg!! (I'd also like to see more of his reaction to Mansell's suicide attempt, tbh.)

MANSELL MY TRASH CINNAMON ROLL 4EVER.

Yes, I am definitely writing those fics. Though, granted, a couple of the fics that involve Joe being adopted into the Miles family have some sad things going on. Like in one of them he has an eating disorder (I have like 4,000+ words of that fic written AND I HAVEN'T EVEN GOTTEN TO THE COMFORT) and in the other he's just REALLY DEPRESSED (it started as a straight up fic exploring Joe's autism and then I got really depressed and it devolved into 2,000 words of him being depressed and vaguely suicidal and I'm going with it). Those are both post season 3 AUs, though. The Mansell one is obviously post season 4. And yes, Kent is in the fic and dealing with his own mental health stuff and sort of helping Mansell out because he can't NOT be there, Erica's his twin. (Also Erica and Mansell totally have an open relationship when it comes to sex. COME ON, it would work and honestly from what little we see of Erica she seems like that kind of gal.)

Also I'm writing at least parts of a big D/s AU fic. Fanmail me on tumblr if you want more details on that. I've hashed out a whole bunch of details and scenes with another internet friend and I'm hoping she'll write something in it too. I'm not ever going to post it but I will share with you two.

Mansell and the movieeeeeee. I have this whole headcanon now that Mansell actually really likes classic films and films in general.

(Also I have everyone's sad or fucked up childhoods in my head. Want to know them?! I don't care, I'm telling you anyway.

So Mansell's parents were generally not around, and when they were around they were fighting and throwing things to the point where Mansell just kept his plates and glasses in his room because he didn't want them to break it. And they spent a whole lot of their time screaming at each other about how one was cheating on the other, which Mansell thought was stupid because he knew that they were BOTH cheating on the other. And his mum felt bad that she didn't spend time with him, so she taught Small Mansell how to sew and knit, and he was young enough at first that he didn't know it was 'girly' and then as he grew up he just kept doing it because he liked it and because he was good at it and because it was time with his mum. And then the only thing he ever did with his dad was watch classic films while his dad slowly got drunk and went to sleep.

And Riley grew up in a family without much money and she spent a lot of time caring for her younger brother and sister (they're twins!) and worrying about money because her parents worked all the time, so much of the time that she barely saw them, and they were still struggling.

And the Kent twins grew up with Emerson kind of getting ignored in favor of Erica by their parents because Erica was the difficult child and then when Emerson started getting older and they got into their teens and his mental health deteriorated and the symptoms of BPD started really showing up--even though you can't get diagnosed with a personality disorder until you're eighteen you can still have most or all of the characteristics when you're younger--his parents still kind of focused on Erica because they figured, well, she'd live to thirty. And so Erica ended up taking care of Emerson, which isn't fair for a teenager.

And Joe...well. After his father died he and his mum sort of fell apart and barely even talked or left the house.

And Miles...well, yeah. His dad left, his mom struggled, and a few of his siblings didn't end up well.)
